The Shot Heard Round the College Football World

Not exactly how the NCAA wanted to kickoff the college football season…first a South Carolina vs. N.C. State snoozefest to the score of 7-3, followed by the Oregon/Boise State battle of the blue turf.

The game began with a ceremonial handshake between the two teams, a gesture designed to promote sportsmanship, and in hindsight, proved to be incredibly ironic.

Boise State then handed it to the Ducks from Oregon, to the tune of 19-8.  Pretty much an ass-whooping from a potential BCS buster to an Oregon team with high expectations.

When the game ended, then the fun began.  In an epic battle of douchiness, Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount took offense to some post-game verbal taunting from Boise State’s Byron Hout.  Hout even went so far as to shove the already frustrated Blount, who had a fabulous 8 carries for -5 yards (that’s right, minus 5).

A bit of a dick move on Hout’s part.

Blount had an equally douchey response…a stiff right cross to Hout’s chin, in an attempt to wipe that stupid-ass smirk off his face.  And it worked, as Hout dropped quicker than a whore’s dress on prom night.

But Blount didn’t stop there…instead he half-punched a teammate who had been trying to restrain him, then tried to get after some Boise State fans in the stands after they taunted him on his exit from the stadium.  Police had to restrain him from going into the stands, a la Ron Artest.

Later Blount did the obligatory apology, but by then his fate was pretty well sealed.

As was expected, first year head coach Chip Kelly suspended Blount for the rest of the season, including bowl games.  One scout even went so far as to say that Blount is now completely undraftable.

Yikes.

And in one final act of douchebaggery, the morons running the jumbotron at the stadium thought it’d be a good idea to show the punch on the big screen…you know, in case anyone felt like inciting a riot.

So on the opening night of the college football season, we had 1) a brutal opening 7-3 game, 2) a ridiculous blue turfed stadium, 3) vomit-inducing new uni’s for Oregon, and finally 4) an heinous act of violence from LeGarrette Blount.

But admit it…you secretly enjoyed seeing Blount knock the smirk off that smug son-of-a-bitch didn’t you.
