SEC to Georgia: Sorry We F–ked You Over, We Still Cool?

uga

There’s nothing more irritating than having a close, exciting game ruined by a bad call by the zebra’s.

But that’s exactly what happened this past Saturday in the Georgia/LSU game.  To recap, the Bulldogs were trailing 12-7 late in the fourth quarter when QB Joe Cox hit WR A.J. Green in the end zone to put Georgia up 13-12 with only 1:09 remaining.

Needless to say there was a lot of celebrating by Green and his teammates…too much according to the refs, who assessed a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for excessive celebration. The penalty meant the ‘Dawgs had to kick off from their own 15-yard line.  LSU returned the kick 40-yards, then won the game on a 33-yard touchdown run…all set up by a horrible call from the refs.

How bad was the call on A.J. Green?  Even Florida coach Urban Meyer thought it was terrible.

“That’s just awful,” Meyer told reporters in Gainesville, Fla. “I can’t stand that when then happens. I just think that’s wrong.”

But you know what may be worse than losing a huge conference game on a brutal call?

When the supervisor of officials comes out and says the refs blew the call…which is exactly what Rogers Redding, the SEC supervisor of officials said today.

“The video doesn’t support what the official called,” Redding said. “He was celebrating with his teammates, which is fine. The officials were trying to herd them up and get them to the sideline, and what the official reacted to was the player coming out from that group of teammates and making what appeared to be a gesture to the crowd.”

“I’ve concluded that it was one that we probably should have let go.”

So there you have it Georgia…the SEC admits it’s refs f–ked up.

Now doesn’t that make your 3-2 record, and infinitesimal chance at the BCS National Championship, seem just a little better.

Now, how about a hug. [CBS Sports via With Leather]
