Usually heartwarming, feel-good stories like this annoy the hell out of me. But not today. Nope, today I’m feelin’ fine, and this story probably won’t contain any of my usual sarcasm or cynicism. Well, not much anyway.
Remember a few months back, when USC tailback Stafon Johnson nearly freaking died after having his throat crushed in a frightening weightlifting accident? Not only has he recovered, but he’s opting to enter the NFL draft instead of applying for a medical hardship, which would have given him an extra year of eligibility.
This news comes via Johnson’s uncle, Kregg Anderson. Apparently Johnson has already notified coach Pete Carroll of his decision to go pro. Anderson also said that Stafon’s weight is up to 214 lbs, after dipping to 188 lbs following the accident. Johnson’s playing weight was around 220 lbs.
Stafon Johnson’s goal right now is to receive an invite to the Senior Bowl on Jan. 30th. in Mobile, Alabama. A good showing would improve his draft stock immensely, and put to rest any doubts NFL scouts may have about his health.
The storybook ending to this chapter of Johnson’s life would be to get drafted, earn a roster spot, followed by a long and profitable NFL career. All topped off by the unimaginative, sickly-sweet, Disneyesque, feel-good, inspirational, comeback of the year, sports-type movie.
Which I would go see in a heartbeat. [NFL.com Blogs, Image]
