Saints Topple Colts 31-17 to Capture First Super Bowl

Who dat?

Super Bowl champions, that’s who.

Led by a masterful performance from QB Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints did what most people didn’t think they could–beat the Colts in the Super Bowl.  Brees was 32-39 for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns, which earned the Saints pivot Super Bowl MVP honors.

Here are some of my thoughts on the game…

  • can’t blame Peyton Manning for the pick-six by Tracy Porter that put the Saints up 31-17.  Blame Reggie Wayne–seriously, what the hell was Wayne doing on that play anyway.
  • you saw two of the reasons why both Manning and Brees are so successful–great offensive lines.  They both had more than ample time to throw the ball, were hardly ever pressured, and only one sack was recorded (on Brees no less).
  • as much as I despise Greg Williams for the wretched job he did in Buffalo, the adjustments he made at halftime were the difference.  Joseph Addai was tearing off big gains every time he touched the ball in the first half (60 yards), but in the second half–not so much (17 yards).
  • I don’t agree with Phil Simms assessment of Sean Payton’s decision to go for it on 4th down on the Colts 1-yard line, with 1:49 left to play.  Like Payton  himself said–you’ve got to make gutsy calls if you want to win the big games.
  • speaking of gutsy–true story, before the kickoff to start the second half, I thought Payton might call for the onside kick.  And he did.  And it worked.  It’s the perfect time to call for one, guaranteed that 9 times out of 10 the opposing team won’t be ready for it.
  • pretty obvious Dwight Freeney’s ankle wasn’t 100%.  Still, he got the only sack of the game.  Props to Freeney for his toughness.  If he were 100%, the Colts might be celebrating another Super Bowl victory.  Just sayin’.

Unfortunately I didn’t get too see the Super Bowl commercials, seeing that I live in Canada, and the US stations up here get the Canada feed.  So all I got were about a million ads for the upcoming Winter Olympics, complete with a very old and haggard looking Donald Sutherland.  I’m sure I’ll have no problem finding the Super Bowl commercials on the web.

Overall it was a pretty damn good game.  Nice to see the Saints win one for the city of New Orleans.  Bourbon Street will be a madhouse for the next 3 weeks…as soon as the locals are finished celebrating the Super Bowl win, Mardi Gras starts.

Definitely a good time to be in New Orleans.
