Soccer Ref Doesn’t Quite Understand the Rules

Hey look, a futbol football soccer post.  How very international of me. And by international, I mean I’m doing a story about a sport that has popularity and relevance everywhere in the world but here.

With a few minor exceptions, the rules of soccer are easy to understand.  Hell, I even understand the differences between a yellow card and a red card for infractions…and I’m pretty well retarded.

This ref, however, doesn’t quite seem to grasp the rules of the game–which sucks, seeing that he’s a ref and all.  The video after the jump is taken from a soccer match in a some made-up country we’ll call Greece.  Our clueless ref hands out a red card (and ejection) for a blatant, attempt-at-injuring tackle.

Pretty straightforward, right?  Until you see who the tacklee (?) is…

Ridiculous, no?  The ejected player, in an obvious attempt at aiding the slow and inept security, trips up crazed fan, slowing him down enough for Barney Fife and partner to apprehend said fan.  And for his heroic (yes, heroic–dude could have had a knife or a cheese sandwich) effort, he gets the boot.

I just don’t get soccer.

Hmm – Violent conduct is a red card. The laws do not say that it has to be directed to a player.  If a player is ‘violent’ to an opposition player, an official, a dog that runs onto the field or even an advert board it has the potential to be a straight red.

    ref was right.
