Super Bowl XLIV The Most Watched Program in TV History

CBS must be loving this.  The Nielsen ratings are out, and last night’s Super Bowl  is now the most watched program in television history, with 106.5 million viewers.  The depressingly preachy final episode of M*A*S*H, way back in 1983, held the previous record of 105.97 million viewers.

Last year’s matchup between the Steelers and Cardinals was the highest rated Super Bowl, with 98.7 million people watching–that is until this year’s Saints/Colts game blew those numbers out of the water.

I for one am glad that the ratings were so high.  It puts to rest the idea that a Colts/Vikings Super Bowl would have brought in higher ratings, and proves that the Saints and the city of New Orleans comeback from Hurricane Katrina are just as compelling to viewers as an aging, self-centered douchebag quarterback.
