Cut by Mariners, Eric Byrnes Set to Become a Beer League Ringer
Eric Byrnes was recently let go by the Seattle Mariners, after posting some abysmal numbers in 15 games (.094/.237/.156 with zero homers and zero RBI). Byrnes had no harsh words for the organization–let’s face it, the guy was brutal. The M’s had no choice but to cut the 34-year-old outfielder.
But that doesn’t mean he’s done with organized ball. Not by a long shot. Byrnes will make $11 million this year (thank you D-Backs) to rake for a team sponsored by Dutch Goose, a burger and beer pub. That’s right folks, Eric Byrnes is going to play in a Wednesday softball league with his buds.
And I, for one, applaud him. No sense hanging on when your skills have left you…better to call it quits, join a beer league, and have a little fun with your friends. Of course, it helps that Byrnes will still be making $11 million–which means he’ll be picking up the tab after games most nights.
“This is going to be a blast,” he said. “Playing with my buddies. I can’t wait for my first hit. I’m going to ask for the ball.”
Screw the first hit–Byrnes should be more excited about tapping that first keg. Because really, isn’t that what playing softball in a beer league is all about?
