Jose Canseco Makes a Triumphant Return to Professional Baseball (Sort Of)

The Laredo Broncos of the United League, an independent professional baseball league, announced the signing of former Major League Baseball player, author, MMA fighter, living joke, and now homeless person, Jose Canseco, to a contract for the remainder of this season.  Canseco’s duties will include DH’ing, pinch hitting, and acting as a bench coach.

This isn’t Canseco’s first time playing independent league baseball.  Back in 2006 the slugger spent some time with a couple of teams in the Golden Baseball League, going on to win the league’s home run derby.

The Broncos are planning on holding a press conference Monday to announce the Canseco signing, although the team’s website is already trumpeting the deal as the “biggest signing of independent baseball history,” which may be laying it on just a little too thick…

In the biggest signing of independent baseball history, the Laredo Broncos of Laredo, Texas have signed former Major League slugger Jose Canseco to a players contract for the 2010 season.

Canseco will be introduced at a press conference on Monday August 16, 2010 at a place and time TBA. He will be in uniform and with the Broncos for the August 16, 17, 18th games vs. Rio Grande Valley White Wings as well as on August 28, 29, & 30th vs. Coastal Bend Thunder.

On the surface this is nothing more than an obvious publicity stunt, but Canseco, according to the press release, is using this latest return to baseball as a way of making it back to the majors as either a coach or manager.  And here’s another bonus–whilst with the Broncos, cameras will be following the 46-year-old around as they film a baseball reality show.

If Canseco thinks he’ll ever make it back to the show, he’s completely delusional.  Somehow he’s managed to keep his name in the news, albeit barely, but methinks this latest attempt at relevancy will (hopefully) be his last.
