As far as managerial meltdowns go, this is nearly as good as Phil Wellman’s epic tantrum of three years ago. While Wellman’s is the gold standard, Gary Robinson’s tirade is right up there too.
Robinson, the State College (Pa.) Spikes manager, was upset with a call by umpire Roberto Ortiz, and the two jawed back and forth for a bit before Robinson stormed off. Ortiz ran him, and that’s when Robinson went off in a most spirited, peculiar way.
His tantrum is equal parts Lou Piniella, Earl Weaver and Wellman himself, with a splash of Terrell Owens thrown in for good measure.
Confused yet? You won’t be once you see the video, which is waiting for you after the jump…
Comical? Yes.
Scripted? Possibly.
That’s the debate, whether or not the 57-year-old Robinson had this planned out ahead of time. Pulling the pen out of his jersey (now you get the T.O. reference) is the smoking gun for me. Combine that with the few moments Robinson spent in the dugout before going into his act, and you’ve got to question Robinson’s motives. But really, who cares. From all reports the game was pretty boring to begin with–nothing like a good old managerial tantrum to spice things up.
Phil Wellman approves.
