• Video: Cards Derek Anderson Rips Reporter After 49ers Loss

  Something struck Derek Anderson funny in the third quarter of the Arizona-San Francisco Monday Nighter.  Was it something lineman Deuce Lutui said as the pair enjoyed a moment on the sideline, reveling in the 18-point deficit their team faced, or did Anderson catch a glimpse of his laughable stats (16-35, 196 yards, zero TD’s, 1 INT) on the Jumbotron?

  Look, I admire, even respect, Anderson’s lackadaisical attitude towards work—it’s not like the game was “a win leaves us one game back of the division leader in the comically weak NFC West” type of game anyway.  OK, so it was, but even Derek Anderson had to realize that with him being his usual Derek Anderson-y self, the Cardinals had no chance to come back and win (which they obviously didn’t, since the final was 27-6).  Why not laugh your troubles away?

• Bama Staffer’s Musically Inspired Joke at Cam Newton’s Expense Gets Him Fired

  Prior to this past Saturday’s Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn, an University of Alabama staff member thought it’d be a hoot to poke a little fun at Auburn QB Cam Newton, his father, and their ongoing recruiting scandal, by way of a couple of choice songs played over the Bryant-Denny Stadium PA system.

  The unnamed ‘Bama staffer played the songs “Take the Money and Run” by Steve Miller, and “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield, the latter being a reference to Newton’s father Cecil, who is the pastor at Temple Avenue Church.

  Well, looks like Auburn and the Newtons got the last laugh, because that little stunt cost the part-time staff member their job. Read more ›

   

• Video: Epic Hockey Fight Leaves Kings Kevin Westgarth Bloodied and Broken

  Chicago’s John Scott and Kevin Westgarth of the Kings dropped the gloves Saturday night during the ‘Hawks 2-1 win over Los Angeles, and it’s pretty obvious from this picture who took the decision in the scrap.

• Report: Jon Gruden Set to Become Newest Miami Hurricanes Football Coach

  If it’s true that is.  I mean, has there ever been a rumor on these here interwebs that has been false?

  Barely a day after firing Randy Shannon, a report comes out (via Twitter) that the Miami Hurricanes and Jon Gruden are close to a contract for about $3 million a season…that is, if it’s true.

  Gruden, currently one of the talking heads in the Monday Night Football booth, hasn’t coached since 2008, when he was let go by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  To have “Chucky” repping “The U” would be phenomenal, what with his coaching pedigree, name recognition, and familiarity with the great state of Florida (aka America’s dong).  But the timing of this seems just a bit, well, odd. • Oklahoma State Pulls Off Quite The Amazing Interception

  The Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game this past Saturday was definitely a worthy addition to the ongoing Bedlam Series.  The back-and-forth battle between the two Big 12 combatants was a barnburner, but No. 14 Oklahoma prevailed in the end, 47-41.

  However, it was the Cowboys of Oklahoma State that pulled off the play of the game, an amazing interception that has to be seen to be appreciated.

• LeBron Shoulder Bumps Coach Erik Spoelstra—Accidental or Intentional?

  Think things are getting just a wee bit testy in Miami right about now?  The Heat are sitting at 9-8 (yes, 9-8) after yet another loss, this time to the Dallas Mavericks, 106-95.  This latest defeat prompted a closed door, players only meeting immediately after the game.  And Erik Spoelstra’s job status remains tenuous at best.

• Mustache Ho! NHL’s Minnesota Wild and Their Fans Set World Mustache Record

  Unofficially of course, but it’s a safe bet that the 1133 mustachioed gentleman that hit the ice at Xcel Energy Center following the Minnesota Wild’s 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators will receive their recognition from the people at Guinness World Records in due time.

  The plan to try and set the record for the “largest gathering of people with mustaches” was an obvious tip of the hat to Movember, the non-profit organization founded in 2004 to help promote awareness, and raise funds, for prostate cancer.  Now thanks to Movember, instead of mustaches being relegated to dudes, gigolos, 70s porn stars and Tom Selleck, any guy can proudly sport a fine crop of upper lip hair, all in the name of charity.  Well, for the month of November anyway…anything beyond that and it’s just creepy.

• Video: High School Football Team Performs a Glee Inspired Dance Number

  As part of a video competition during the Marsh Hoosier Classic at Lucas Oil stadium, the Decatur Central High School varsity football team performed their own version of Glee’s version of Beyonce’s version of Put a Ring on It.  Unfortunately I’m not up on pop culture or today’s music, so I have no idea what the last two parts of that sentence mean.

• 6 Athletes With Questionable Post-Retirement Career Choices

  Other than the money, notoriety, women, and the fact that they get to play sports for a living, know what else is great about being a professional athlete?

  Retirement.

  How so?  Because when athletes retire, unlike us working schmucks, they’re still young men or women, usually in their 40′s, with hopefully enough cash left over from their playing careers to live comfortably.

  Still, some use their free time to pursue other endeavors, some good, some bad.  A ton of athletes find a second, post-retirement career in broadcasting, because it’s easy, pays fairly well, keeps them in the spotlight, and it’s easy.  Did I mention it’s easy?
