• Chad Ochocinco, New England Patriots Media, and the Beauty of a Group Hug

  Chad Ochocinco met with the New England media for the first time Saturday since being dealt to the Patriots, and what we witnessed was a kinder, gentler Ochocinco.  Sounding humble, charming, and almost reserved, the talented receiver was either so happy to get out of Cincinnati that he’s willing to tow the company line no matter what the cost, or he’s completely bought into the Bill Belichick school of what it takes to be a Patriot.

  I’d say it’s a little bit of both.

  Ochocinco, still the charmer, and still drunk from the joy of not having to play for the Bengals, had one final request for the throng of media members before calling it a day.  In a rather sweet moment, Ochocinco politely asked for a group hug, to which the reporters obliged, then told them, “I love you guys.” Read more ›

   

• Bill Belichick Makes a Funny When Discussing His Social Media Habits

  You knew that it was inevitable that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick would get questioned about WR Chad Ochocinco’s significant social media presence, especially on Twitter.  With Ochocinco’s penchant for tweeting, and athletes getting themselves in trouble in 140 characters or less on a daily basis, it was a valid question.

  But Bill Belichick, being the sly dog that he is, deflected the question with a little good old fashioned humor…Belichick style.  Which is to say that it was somewhat funny, elicited a chuckle from the group of reporters, and was pretty much what you’d expect from someone as blatantly humorless as Belichick. • FC Barcelona Told to Take Their Ball and Go Home by National Mall Park Police

  FC Barcelona, arguably the best professional soccer team in the world, are currently in Washington DC as they prepare to take on Manchester United in a friendly rematch of their UEFA Champions League final this coming Saturday.

  Messi, Xavi, Silva, Puyol and the rest of the stacked squad were looking to get a little practice time before the weekend match, and they decided to partake in an impromptu session at the National Mall, a U.S. national park situated near the White House.  That is, until this U.S. Park Police officer showed up and told the group to disperse.

  The officer asked to speak to the leader of the group, and shortly thereafter, the Barcelona players sheepishly boarded the bus like a bunch of school kids busted for playing hooky. Read more ›

   

• Pastor Joe Nelms Epic Pre-Race Prayer Sounds Even Better Auto-Tuned

  Pastor Joe Nelms’ prayer prior to last week’s Nationwide Federated Auto Parts 300, where he dropped a quote from Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby, was a thing of beauty in it’s own right, but now that it’s been turned into an auto-tuned country song, it may be even better, if you can believe it.

• VIDEO: A Ball From Josh Beckett Brings This Young Red Sox Fan to Tears

  Touching moment from the Red Sox-Royals game this past Thursday afternoon, as Boston starter Josh Beckett presented a young Red Sox fan sitting in the front row a baseball, which brought the youngster to tears.

  Nice gesture by Beckett, which undoubtedly made the kid’s day—unless he was hoping for a ball from Big Papi or something.  Then he’s crying because Josh Beckett totally screwed him over, because we all know no matter how cute a kid is, nobody gets handed a free ball twice in one game. • Spanish Bank Needs a Loan, Puts Up Cristiano Ronaldo as Collateral

  Yes, Spanish bank Bankia did indeed put up soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Real Madrid teammate Kaka, as collateral as they try to secure loans from the European Central Bank (ECB), and the reasoning for doing so is actually quite plausible.

  See, Bankia helped finance Real Madrid’s acquisition of Ronaldo and Kaka  by loaning the club 76.5 million euros (approximately $111 million), which went towards the 100 million euros paid to Manchester United for Ronaldo, and the 60 million euros given to Milan AC for Kaka.

  Therefore, to ensure that the ECB would actually give them the borrowed moneys their asking for, Bankia put up two of their most valuable assets—Ronaldo and Kaka.  Which means that if Bankia defaults on the loan, the Real Madrid stars would in fact, become property of the ECB.

  Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony is on a promotional tour of China with fellow NBAer Chris Paul, and during a break in his busy touring schedule, went and had his picture taken with this cute and cuddly panda.  Nothing much more I can say about this, except that I’m glad that Melo’s wearing his protective plastic gloves, and for you guys to soak in how the other half lives.

• Is Ron Artest, aka Metta World Peace, Going to be on Dancing With the Stars?

  This makes so much sense that it’s unbelievable that it took so long into the NBA lockout for someone to come up with this million dollar idea.  If any athlete deserves to shine on Dancing With the Stars, it’s Ron Artest Metta World Peace.

  TMZ is reporting that the LA Lakers forward is in discussion with the hit ABC show to appear on the next season of DWTS, and is said to be very excited about the possibility of joining the as yet unknown cast.  The timing of the show shouldn’t be a problem, so long as the NBA lockout continues through the fall.  The only way there’s an issue with Artest, er, World Peace shaking his moneymaker on DWTS is if the lockout ends early, and the NBA resumes it’s season on schedule. • Here’s a Praying Mantis Wreaking Havoc in the Florida Marlins Dugout

  That’s the little bugger right there, nonchalantly perched on the cap of Marlins pitcher Clay Hensley.  Late in Florida’s 11-2 drubbing of the Nationals, the mantis landed on Hensley’s back before making its way to the top of his hat, where it stayed for nearly a half inning.  As the insect started working its way off Hensley’s cap, the Marlins hurler gently placed the praying mantis on the dugout railing.
