And to a lesser extent, women.

Charles Mainor, a Jersey City assemblyman and police detective, is in a bit of hot water for the Facebook status update you see here.  While touting the merits of his beloved Giants, he did so by lobbing a couple of insults at NFC East rivals Philly and Dallas.  Unfortunately Mainor used a couple of not-so-endearing terms…and by not-so-endearing, I mean slightly misogynistic and fairly homophobic.

Assemblyman Charles Mainor, a Jersey City police detective who represents the 31st Legislative District in the state Assembly, posted a message last night that read, “We are not going to just lay down, we come to play. Who the hell do you think we are the DALLAS COWGIRLS OR THOSE GAYBIRDS FROM PHILLY…NO WE ARE THE NEW YORK GIANTS.”

Not surprisingly Mainor’s Facebook status caused an uproar mainly amongst gays, women and birds, which included one call to The Jersey Journal “complaining about the message’s anti-woman, anti-gay tone,” which, in turn, caused Mainor to apologize fr his actions…sort of.

Mainor was in Jersey City last night at a party to watch the Giants play the Green Bay Packers when he posted almost the entire above message on his Facebook page, he said. A friend of his sat at the computer and added the comment about the “gaybirds from Philly,” Mainor said.

“I have to take full responsibility because it was under my name,” he said. “I have no excuse, other than me not looking before he did send the post.”

That sounds believable enough I guess.  I mean, the Cowgirls insult is just weak and lazy but not quite as immature as the Gaybirds slur, so they could have been written by two different people.  Either way, let this serve as yet further proof that celebs, athletes and politicians need more work policing their social media habits.
