Silly Stringing at the Hands of Lightning Mascot Pushes Bruins Fan Over the Edge

Thunderbug, the Tampa Bay Lightning mascot, is your typical sports mascot in that he spends his time during home games dancing around, shaking hands and posing for pictures with fans, and causing general mayhem of the harmless, yet fun, variety.  Once in a while Thunderbug likes to break out the silly string and spray unsuspecting attendees at Lightning games, which usually results in a good laugh by all.

But spray the wrong person just once—say a rather large, rather intense Bruins fan watching his team lose to Tampa Bay—and all hell breaks loose.  Obviously pissed over his silly stringing, the dude gives Thunderbug a shove, but is blocked from escalating things further by a couple of Lightning fans and a surprisingly speedy and efficient usher who escorts the seething Boston fan out of the building for a much needed timeout. The Lightning fans respond accordingly with a smattering of applause and catcalls.

Video follows the jump…

At some point this guy should have stopped and realized that he was yelling at a guy/girl in a giant bug costume, which is only slightly less embarrassing than that garish Boston Bruins Stanley Cup shirt he was wearing.  Sometimes it pays to be the bigger man in a confrontation, especially when the other man is a 6-foot-tall costumed insect armed with silly string.

He hit him in the face with silly string. I would be pissed too if a stupid mascot hit me in the face with anything.

    • Housesoldman

which is why HROADBLOCK should be sharing a cell somewhere with the fool who was escorted out and relieved of his option to watch the rest of his game.  If you think silly string is a problem dude you may want to watch your back when you drop the soap in the place that attitude should take you.

Normally these comments lack certain humor. But for the first time I actually got a genuine laugh at a comment of the humor varity in the true sense of the word.  Nicely put (Houseoldman).

Haha! Wonder if this guy can spell Anger Management?

  • Sgt Hulka

In a city bursting at the seams with imbeciles, drunken thugs, and loud mouth know-nothings, we have finally found the poster child for Boston sports fans….congratulations sir, you are the epitome of a tool…may you be repeatedly hit in your sack by your five year old nephew while you lie unconscious in a alcohol induced stupor…

    • Adevlin102

SGT What would you do if you paid good money for a seat and minding your own business and someone did this to you?

      • Gypsyfrogg

umm..NOT shove them down from behind?  and minding his own biz?..I rather doubt that.  Looks like people around him were reacting to something going on between him and the mascot.  That mascot is probably a young kid for crying out loud…grow up.

      • Flyrzfan1

        laugh about it… it’s a f*cking game…

      • Haydar

Laugh it off, espeicially if it was by a MASCOT.  Not like it was another fan, then it may have been justified.  But to push a mascott?  Come on.  Poor sportsmanship.

    • rx1966

Another envious hater picking on Titletown- suck it!

    • GUEST444

I couldn’t agree more. Fat,drunk and stupid is no way to go through life .

  • Teri

Gee, thanks for removing the video….

  • Derka

Do this in public to people and see how long it takes for you to get knocked out or arrested.  I think the mascot should have been ejected.

  • Mascots Blow

I hate all Boston fans, but actually agree.  Don’t touch me with anything if you don’t have approval.  I would’ve gone back to the seat and said I wasn’t leaving either.

    • Haydar

And you would have been arrested.  Lucky the idiot fan didn’t get arrested.

  • Juice from Maine

The dude really flew off the handle.  If you’re a visitor, you’re gonna get picked on.  Just take it and be a better host next time.

What a fa*got mascot. The big guy should have shanked the d0uch3. He has it coming he shot the string crap in his face.

    • Haydar

You’re an idiot just like him.

  • ND52′, Oklahoma City

Wow! Bam-Bam Bigelow hasn’t aged a day since he left professional wrestling. Apparently, steroid abuse slows the aging process in some folks .

    Go figure!

    • me

he hasn’t aged because he’s DEAD

I’d sue the mascot for assault.  When I pay good money to see a game I do not expect, nor want, my experience to be interrupted with a shot of silly string.   If I wanted to see Gallagher I would go see Gallagher.  Stupid mascot is stupid.

  • Gypsyfrogg

Personally, I think there was a build up to WHY he got shot with silly string…they were probably mouthing off or something.  To those of who who think the mascot got what he deserved…remember that the next time you ever want to do something to someone who may not appreciate it.  And have that person escalate it to physical assault with intent to harm.
If he truly felt violated or harassed, he could have complained–uh, they have it on tape. Duh.  He could have asked for a refund or another ticket, or hell season tix!  What if it were just a kid in that costume?  You’d feel pretty stupid beating up a kid.  (I hope…)

    {Maybe he’s only mad because he realized it wasn’t string CHEESE?}

  • Louis

Guy buys his ticket to see the show: the hockey game. Not be the show. Thats what the clown in suit does. The ‘boo hoo’ gestures after the guy is turfed for doing nothing wrong but being made sport of by a jackass who didn’t pay for his seat is twice as offensive as the original act. TBL should fire that clown.

  • Fred Balls

    I smell a lawsuit!

  • Flyrzfan1

he sprayed him on the back… not in the face…

  • Sports Fan

Things happened between the two prior to the fan being shot in the face with silly string.  Looks to me like the bug taunted the fan, if so, is that acceptable?  Is it also acceptable to shoot a fan in the face with anything, even silly string?

  • Rick

why did they edit the video.. and not show how the dude was squirted right in the face with that string junk. I would have been pissed too.

  • Chrissy76

First of all it was silly string it’s not like he hit him in the face with an actual object that hurt him or did something to him.  Hate to catorgorize it but this guy is your sporting event attendee idiot who scream I’ll start a fight in the parking lot if the game doesn’t go my way after I’ve had my 12 beers…especially since he got that upset about silly string…Give me a break…and for those who commented they’d be mad to if they were hit in the face with silly string…I can only hope you never attend ANY Event in PUBLIC EVER, that way the remainder of us can actually enjoy our public outings without having to deal with drunken or just plain stupid ignorant people who just can’t seem to got anywhere and just have a good time….

    • jojosim

The point is it doesnt matter if it’s pixie dust or an anvil, you can’t spray things into peoples face. It is assault.

    • Smendelson

On Halloween, my 85 year old mother who was sitting outside to see the children in their costumes had the same thing done to her by a neighborhood stooge. She was quite upset and got the stuff in her mouth. This guy is currently in prison for a non related  arrest.

  • Juju6060

Just get rid of the stupid mascots at professional sporting events.  While they’re at it tell the Rays that most professional baseball teams don’t have or need 13 year old cheerleaders

    • Mdavis1

I am shocked at how many people on this site are defending this fat a$$ for shoving the mascot. What a bunch of roided up tools – the same ones you see lifting in front of the mirror at the gym. enjoy your Shake Weights boys. I notice he didn’t stand up to any of the guys taunting him. Typical fat butt fantasy sports geek. On the other hand, maybe the mascot got silly string on his IPad during an intense Angry Birds session – we don’t know.     :-)

  • Unclegoldberg

There’s a woman in the bug costume – or at least there was some years ago when I lived in Tampa and helped set up a show where Thunderbug was one of the appearances.  Just FYI…

  • jojosim

Mascot or not, silly string or not, you can’t spray things into a persons face. This is assault in the real world.  But I guess it’s okay if you wear a costume and it’s a sporting event.  I like silly string in my beer and nachos.   As soon as a mascot causes someone eye damage or they accidently trip, then the silly string will go away. At the same time, you can’t go tackling a magot, I mean a mascot. The real nobs are the fans who get drunk and start fights because they hate their lives.

  • GUEST444

Typical Boston trash. At least he got an early start  listening to Jump Around by House of Pain.

  • Fourmalts

I’m a Boston fan, but it looks like the dude may have had drunken roid rage and had been talking smack to the mascot before getting strung up.  He was showed up by the mascot and had a hissy.  What a tool.

  • Haydar

So angry!  Awwww, did he feewings get hurt by a some silly string.

  • Haydar

Lol!  Well played sir, very well played.

  • Gensweb

Kidding right? ——–Tampa Bay Lightning would become Las Vegas Lightning

  • Johnfbonner

what the hell is a hulka?

  • picnic65

I read the comments and have some of my own.  1) it is a well known fact that the mascot is going to harass the opposing fans, so be mentally prepared it may be YOU.  2) every one
always cries lawsuit.  Granted he sprayed the guy in the face but I can tell that there was more to this video than what is shown.  Every incident does not have to end up in front of a judge or court.  These frivolous lawsuits are a major part of  pricing that is passed on to the consumer. The silly string definitely didn’t hurt the fan and any decent individual would have laughed it off.  The anger expressed by fans is what is causing the deaths and injuries at sporting events.  This s**t is just a game that is making other people rich.  Win or lose enjoy the game for what it is entertainment!!!!!!

  • nottampafan

you need someone to fill all those empty seats

  • Poppee_cock

Really???  So fans of other teams aren’t allowed to go to visiting stadiums, to watch their team, without being harrassed?  So you want other fans to stay out of Tampa’s stadium?  Well, that’s fine, that means there would only be about 3,000 people in Tampa’s  stadium then and they’ll have to relocate the team.

The guy paid for the ticket, same as you did.

  • rskills

Glad to see it didn’t escalate, but I can’t really blame the guy. It may be “harmless” silly string, but the mascot sprayed it directly into the guy’s left eye, so I think he has every right to be pissed. Reminds me of Orlando Brown catching the ref’s flag directly to the eye, which resulted in a shoving as well.
