This past Tuesday was a rough day for Real Sociedad goalkeeper Enaut Zubikarai. Scratch that—it was arguably the worst day of Zubikarai’s professional career. Not only did he have to face the ignominy of giving up six goals to Mallorca during their Copa del Rey round of 16 match, which was brutal enough on it’s own, but the way in which Mallorca scored their fourth goal will haunt the Real Sociedad keeper for years to come.
With Mallorca bringing the ball into the opposition’s zone, a Real Sociedad defender was able to fend off a challenge and safely pass the ball to Zubikarai, who scooped it up, walked out in front of his net a few feet or so, and casually dropped the ball to the turf in preparation of clearing it out to one of his Real Sociedad teammates. Only thing is that Zubikarai’s plans never got off the ground, so to speak, because Mallorca midfielder Gonzalo Castro snuck up behind the unsuspecting keeper, picked his pocket, and scored his second goal of the match. I have a sneaking suspicion that Castro’s second tally was a lot easier than the first.
Video of Zubikarai’s gaffe follows the jump…
I bet it’ll be a long time before Enaut Zubikarai forgets to check his blind spot again. That is, if he ever sees any significant game action in the near future, which is doubtful following this dreadful performance.
