Devils and Rangers engage in a line brawl immediately after the opening puck drop

Boy, that escalated quickly… I mean, that really got out of hand fast.

The Rangers and Devils weren’t wasting any time tonight, dropping the gloves immediately after the puck dropped at Madison Square Gardens.  All told the refs handed out 40-minutes in penalties to the seven combatants involved in the line brawl, all of whom received 5-minute fighting majors.  The only exception was the Devils’ Bryce Salvador who was assessed a 10-minute misconduct for coming to teammate Ryan Carter’s aid by grabbing the Rangers player he was tussling with, Stu Bickel.

New York went on to defeat New Jersey 4-2, and with the victory became the first Eastern Conference team to clinch a playoff berth.
