Would you believe there’s a semi-pro ball team in Kansas named the Bee Jays?

Best baseball team name ever?  Best baseball team name ever.

Yes Virginia, there really exists a semi-pro baseball team named the Bee Jays, and if that weren’t spectacular enough, would you believe they hail from the quaint midwestern town of Liberal, Kansas?  While it’s easy, and quite fun, to laugh at the Liberal Bee Jays and their hilarious name, it’s not so easy to mock the team’s five national championships and 13 state titles.  In their long and storied history the Bee Jays have sent 165 players to the majors, including current Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler.

That’s right, Ian Kinsler, like many of us, started out as a Bee Jay.

But getting back to that handle, who in their right mind thought that a semi-pro team from Liberal should be given the name Bee Jays, what with it’s obvious sexual innuendo?  According to the city of Liberal’s website, the team is named for Byron Bancroft “Ban” Johnson, baseball Hall of Famer and founder of the American League.  A nice sentiment to say the least, and a great way to honor one of baseball’s founding fathers, but how you get Bee Jays from Ban Johnson is beyond me.  Well, besides the obvious anyway.

Nonsensical team name or not, I’m ready to throw my full support behind the Liberal Bee Jays as they look to capture yet another Jayhawk League Championship, a feat I’m sure they’ll have no problem accomplishing, because I can guarantee that every one of their 22 players is an exceptional talent.  How do I know this, without ever having seen the team play a single inning?  Like the old saying goes, “there’s no such thing as a bad Bee Jay.”
