Chipper Jones shows off what the after effects of a BJ Upton line drive to the ankle looks like

Nastylicious.

We’ve seen our fair share of gnarly bruises around here (see Lepisto, Sami and Crain, Jesse), so when Braves 3rd baseman Chipper Jones recently tweeted out this photo of his horrifically bruised left ankle—the end result of a BJ Upton line drive off the leg early in the 2012 season—it really shouldn’t have made anyone squeamish in the least, seeing that we’ve been desensitized to images like these for a while now.

Except that Chipper’s bruise has a rather large bandage on it, something he alludes to in the message that accompanied this graphic photo…

And that’s where the intrigue lies.  What exactly is going on underneath that bandage Chipper?  Exposed bone, ligaments and tendons?  Some kind of muscular deformity?  A regrettable unicorn tattoo from your minor league days?  Like the great mysteries of the unknown, the world may never know.
