Manny Ramirez is suiting up for the Los Aguilas Eagles in the Dominican Winter League, and in his debut, in front of some 20,000 fans, went deep on the first pitch he saw, hitting a somewhat impressive opposite field home run. I say somewhat because the talent level in the Dominican League pales in comparison to the Majors, but still, it was nice to see the 40-year-old Ramirez put one out, albeit against lower level competition.
Apparently the Dominican leagues don’t have as strident drug testing rules in place as Major League baseball.
“I’m not thinking about the big leagues now,” Ramirez said when he joined the Los Aguilas Eagles. “Right now I’m thinking of helping the Eagles to win games and then, if any offer, then I’ll think of baseball.”
And I have to agree with The Hall of Very Good on this point…
Me thinks Ramirez might want to continue being content banging baseballs in the Dominican because, well, that big league call back to Mannywood probably won’t be coming any time soon.
Yeah, not many teams will be looking to sign an aging slugger with a history of PED use…although, with the way the Marlins are selling off players in their semi-annual fire sale, who knows?
