Touching military family reunion follows first pitch at Rays-Red Sox game

reunionThursday night’s game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox at Tropicana Field was going to be a big one for 9-year-old Alayna Adams, as she was selected to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, an honor she received from the U.S.O. because of her father, Lieutenant Colonel Will Adams, who has been serving overseas in Afghanistan for the better part of two years.

Little did Alayna know that the her opening pitch was going to be small potatoes compared to what happened next.

Moments after her pitch came up a few feet short and rolled into the waiting glove of the Rays catcher, the man behind the mask rose and revealed himself to be none other than Adams himself. When Alayna realized what was happening she sprinted into her father’s waiting arms to complete the heartfelt reunion.

The elaborate plan had been set up by the U.S.O., and not even Adams’ wife Dana was in on the ruse. The Army vet, who was supposed to return from his year long tour of duty in Afghanistan on Monday, was flown in early and put up in a hotel Wednesday night, which was bittersweet to the 40-year-old Adams, knowing he was so close to his family yet could not contact them.

Here’s the video of the special moment…

Did it get dusty in here all of a sudden, or is it just me?
