Defensive end Da’Shawn Hand is the nation’s No.1 college recruit, and as such is making the rounds and visiting campuses before making his final choice on where he will be playing college football in the fall. Recently Hand was participating in the Nike Football Training Camp in Columbus, Ohio, and while there sat down and did a little Q & A with CBS Sports senior college football columnist Bruce Feldman.
The interview is pretty standard fare, but still well worth a read if only to get an idea of the recruiting process through the player’s eyes. That being said, there was one particularly funny anecdote provided by Hand when Feldman asked about the craziest thing that has happened to the Woodbridge, Va., native since being named the nation’s top recruit. The answer was both astounding and ridiculous at the same time.
From CBS Sports…
Q: What is the craziest thing that has happened to you since you’ve been named the nation’s No. 1 recruit?
Hand: Well, I ain’t gonna say any names, but one coach told me that since I’m the No. 1 player, I’m gonna get to meet Michael Jackson. I said, “Isn’t he already dead?” The coach goes, “Well, all right, you can meet Tito.” I was like, all right. OK, I’m done.
It was crazy, but it is what it is.
Getting past the fact that it’s pretty much common knowledge that Wacko Jacko died in 2009, who even thinks that Tito is an acceptable alternative? Janet sure, maybe even Jermaine, but Tito? Talk about a proverbial slap in the face to Hand…even when the Jackson 5 were wildly popular nobody wanted to hang with Tito, his brothers included.
Anyone with me in thinking this has Les Miles written all over it? Sounds like his folksy brand of country fried craziness.
