Stop the presses! Ben Affleck set to play Batman in ‘Man of Steel’ sequel

Ben Affleck

News out of Hollywood is that Oscar winner Ben Affleck has been tabbed to play the Caped Crusader in the as-yet-unnamed “Man of Steel” sequel set to be released in 2015. Zack Snyder is slated to direct, with Henry Cavill reprising his role as Superman alongside “Man of Steel” costars Amy Adams and Diane Lane. This isn’t the first time Affleck has taken on the role of film superhero, starring in the very mediocre “Daredevil” in 2003.

Said Snyder (via Entertainment Weekly)…

“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne,” Snyder said in a statement. “I can’t wait to work with him.”

As you can imagine, America’s reaction following the casting news was just about what you’d expect…

Let’s just hope Ben Affleck has the common sense and presence of mind to stay off the Internet for the next couple of days.

To be fair there have been lots of shocking Hollywood casting decisions that somehow seemed to work under the most puzzling of circumstances. Before the franchise began did anyone feel 100% confident about Robert Downey Jr. playing Iron Man? I know I didn’t. And when Michael Keaton was cast as the original Batman, I was like WTF? I myself thought Brandon Routh was a great Superman but apparently Henry Cavill is even better? I thought Eric Bana did a good job as the hulk, it was just the supporting cast that F’d up Ang Lee’s vision but along comes a scrawny geeky looking Ed Norton to Avenge the death of Ang Lee’s seemingly failed attempt at bringing the franchise to the big screen, of course with a much richer supporting cast and a super villain to fight instead of repeatedly killing those pesky military vehicles. To me Spider-man will always be Toby Macquire but that didn’t stop them from recasting it with Andrew Garfield. So this is nothing new, Ben Affleck wants to live out his child hood fantasy no doubt and he has enough clout in tinsel town to get what he wants, period, and the viewing public will just have to suffer through it and gloat if it turns out horribly or offer up apologies if he manages to convince you he is as good a batman as Michal Keaton or Christian Bale or at the very least as mind numbing as Val Kilmer or George Clooney.
