• SEC ref takes a ball to the head, uses it as an excuse to fall into the UK cheerleaders

  While officiating Thursday night’s Kentucky-Georgia college basketball game, referee Antinio Petty was on the receiving end of an errant Bulldogs pass, taking a ball right to the head.  Dazed, possibly hurt, Petty did what any man in his situation would do…he fell into the Kentucky cheerleading squad.

• Nothing to see here, just another beyond halfcourt buzzer beater in double OT

  On Friday night Division II conference rivals Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills met in the final game of the regular season, with playoff seeding on the line.  As you can tell from the picture the final score was 60-58 in double OT for Cal Poly, but how the two teams ended up there is simply amazing.

  Down 57-55, Cal State’s Robert Willhite dropped a three-pointer to put the Toros up by one with only 0.6 seconds left on the game clock.  But that’s all the time that the Broncos needed, as junior guard Mitchel Anderson heaved up a prayer from beyond halfcourt as the buzzer sounded that found nothing but net. • Lindsey Wilson College Beats Georgetown College on Nearly Full-Court Buzzer Beater

  Lindsey Wilson College and Georgetown College, two small schools from Kentucky who compete in the Mid-South Conference of the NAIA, went head to head Saturday night in college hoops, and the ending of their game was something truly spectacular.

  Down 78-76 with barely any time left in the game, Lindsey Wilson senior guard Chase Spreen grabbed the rebound off a Georgetown College missed free throw, dribbled once, then heaved the ball down court from that same free throw line…and nailed it.  An 80-foot, buzzer beating 3-pointer for the improbable 79-78 win.   Slow day around here as I battle the after effects of the annual staff Christmas party, so here’s a picture of Wizards guard and UK alum John Wall in a pair of oversized novelty glasses.  Not exactly the best way to blend into the crowd if you ask me, but I doubt Wall was worried about being recognized while watching No.1 Kentucky squeak out a 73-72 win over No.5 North Carolina. • Detroit Mercy Guard Drives the Lane, Loses the Handle, Makes Basket Anyway

  Detroit Mercy sophomore guard Ray McCallum Jr. certainly had lady luck on his side when he made this improbable basket during his team’s 94-93 win over Austin Peay last week. Heck, even the Harlem Globetrotters would say that shot was impressive. Unlike the Globetrotters however, McCallum’s shot was pure flukiness at it’s best. Read more ›

   

• Tennessee State Frosh M.J. Rhett’s Mom Comes Home From Iraq to Surprise Her Son

  Tennessee State was in Chapel Hill to take on No.1 ranked North Carolina this past Tuesday, and a genuinely touching moment took place during coach John Cooper’s pregame speech when redshirt freshman M.J. Rhett was asked to take the floor, only to be surprised by his mother Stephanie, an E-5 sergeant in the Army National Guard, who was on leave from a tour of duty in Iraq.

  It was the first time the two had seen each other since Stephanie’s deployment last August.  And while Rhett frequently speaks with the woman he refers to as being “like his best friend” via Skype, but this is the first time mother and son have been face-to-face.  M.J. had no idea his mom would be home to see her son play basketball for TSU for the first time, and needless to say, the whole experience was rather emotional.
