USC quarterback Matt Barkley held a press conferenceThursday night to announce he was foregoing entering the NFL draft, instead choosing to return for his senior year of college. That collective sigh of relief from the Trojans faithful could be heard all the way to the East Coast, and I doubt no person was more relieved than head football coach Lane Kiffin.
But Kiffin knew beforehand of Barkley’s decision, which is obviously appropriate seeing that outside of Barkley himself, the decision to return to USC affects Kiffin the most. That didn’t prevent the Trojans QB from having a little fun at his coach’s expense.
Wednesday morning Barkley called his coach to ask him and his wife to come to his house for 5 p.m. There was no joy, no hint of which way he might be leaning in Barkley’s voice, which had Kiffin on edge for the rest of the day. Read more ›
UL-Lafayette strength coach Rusty Whitt, whose team is taking on San Diego State in the R + L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, is either oblivious to the trail of blood running down the side of his face, or he’s so tough and macho that he just doesn’t care. Fresh off his Heisman Trophy win, Baylor QB Robert Griffin III appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman last night to read the show’s Top 10 list of things that went through his mind when he won the Heisman. RG3 did a splendid job too, coming off as comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera, while showing off his pretty decent grasp of comedy, all while rocking a sweet tuxedo.

We’ve seen a few candidates for football “catch of the year,” most notably here and here, but I believe that this grab by Montana State WR Elvis Akpla tops them all. Let’s just say that the few superlatives that I have in my extremely weak vocabulary couldn’t begin to do this catch justice, it’s just that good.
Akpla, who immediately becomes the third greatest Elvis in history (behind Presley and a kid I knew back in middle school named Elvis Terryberry) not only grabs the ball behind the defender’s back (who has good coverage by the way), but he then holds onto the ball with one hand, secures it against his helmet as he goes to the ground, a la Super Bowl XLII hero David Tyree, continues to hang on to the football as he is flipped upside down, and finishes with the ball behind his back in his right hand.

Baylor QB Robert Griffin III is the much deserved 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, easily beating out Stanford QB Andrew Luck. The Bears’ standout received 405 first place votes and 1,687 to Luck’s 247 first place votes and 1,407 points. Alabama RB Trent Richardson finished third with 138 first-place votes and 978 points, while Wisconsin RB Montee Ball and LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Not only did RG3 walk away with the hardware on this night, but there’s also the possibility that he captured the equally impressive title of nominee sporting the best swag at New York’s Downtown Athletic Club, thanks to the tremendous Superman socks he was sporting, complete with Supe’s iconic insignia and flowing red cape. The FCS playoffs are underway, and this past Saturday Wofford and Northern Iowa squared off in the second round, with Northern Iowa winning 28-21. Of the four touchdowns scored by the Panthers, none was more important, and more odd, than their final one, when they went up 28-14 after Wofford kick returner Stephon Shelton pulled a boner for the ages.
Northern Iowa had just gone ahead 21-14 early in the fourth quarter, and on the ensuing Shelton took the ball three yards in the end zone, and decided not to run it out, opting instead for the touchback. Only thing is, the Terriers cornerback forgot one incredibly important detail—to take a knee. Read more ›

The Marshall Thundering Herd became bowl eligible for the first time under head coach Doc Halliday this past Saturday after triumphing over the East Carolina Pirates 34-27 in overtime. Junior WR Aaron Dobson hauled in four passes for 110-yards and a pair of touchdowns on the day, the best one of them being this sick one-handed touchdown grab despite good coverage by the East Carolina defender.
Dobson’s ridiculous circus catch came as the first half was winding down and his team trailing 17-10. The 6-3 receiver’s spectacular snare of a Rakeem Cato pass is equal parts skill and concentration, and if I had the ability to do so, I would nominate this as the Catch of the Year.
