If you think that headline is stupid, and it is, wait until you hear the story of 14-year-old Pavel Pliskov who was banned from participating in the championship game of the Scottish Under-14 Cup because he had the audacity to don the costume of Sam the Bear, the beloved mascot of the Fife Flyers hockey club, and, well, that’s about it.
But that was enough for officials from the Scottish Ice Hockey Association, and they dropped the hammer on Pliskov with their ruling regarding his inclusion in the final game. And if that wasn’t penalty enough, the Lithuanian born teen wasn’t allowed to join his mates on the ice for the medal presentation after his Dundee team won the final game 6-0. Read more ›

Down 3-o in their playoff game against Vaasan Sport on Saturday, TuTo goalie Tommi Virtanen raced to the bench in favor of an extra attacker, thinking there was a delayed penalty call on Vaasan Sport. Only thing was, there wasn’t, a point made all the more painful after Sport’s Mika Halava easily put the puck into the vacated TuTo goal.
The only thing Virtanen got out in return for his inexplicable brain malfunction was a great view of Halava’s goal, and a lot of death stares from his teammates. Not that they should be held blameless in all this. You’d think one of them might have noticed Virtanen’s mistake and ordered him back in the net. Not that it mattered much, as TuTo ended up losing 7-1, although giving up that fourth goal on such a goofy play surely took the wind out of any comeback attempt by TuTo. Read more ›
The goal comes from Detroit Lakes (Minnesota) HS Hockey player Alex Mason, who is described on the YouTube video as a 5-foot10, 220-pound “pure beast” of a player.
After seeing the spectacular, lacrosse-style shorthanded goal he scores on a breakaway during a recent game, that description seems all the more apt.

Obviously fake, but still worth a gander. “Streaker” in flesh colored underwear jumps on the ice and proceeds to disrupt a skating beer can race during a Grand Rapids Griffins game. I still say the Griffins mascot should have destroyed this guy when he had the chance. Now that would have been entertaining. Read more ›
The Sheffield Steelers are a hockey team that plays in the Elite Ice Hockey League in England. Aside from having a roster stocked with equal parts Canadian and British players (with a few Americans thrown in for good measure), and what may be the league’s coolest logo, the Steelers also have a wacky sense of humor, as evidenced by their video for Nickelback’s hit song Rockstar.
The video itself is an exercise in goofiness, and while it lacks the star power of the original (as much as I dislike Nickelback, having Wayne Gretzky, Ted Nugent and the Naked Cowboy appear in the same video is pure genius), it more than makes up for it with plenty of gratuitous male nudity, sexy ladies, guys with no acting experience not knowing what to do with their hands, and one buff, banjo playing dude wearing red underwear. Most of the time when a pair of hockey teams engage in a bench clearing brawl, it’s nothing to laugh at. Of course, most of the time those brawls don’t involve two teams made up of 9-year-old kids. Lucky for us this one does, and instead of turning into a vicious cockfight, this melee may just be the most adorable brouhaha in the history of hockey brawls.
Seems this fracas took place in Kazakhstan, a country most famous for being the birthplace of Borat. Other than that I got nothing when it comes to Kazakhstan. But now I can say that 9-year-old Kazakh hockey players can scrap with the best of them, at least until their parents come out on the ice and put an end to their shenanigans. Read more ›
To tell you the truth, I had no idea they played hockey in Turkey, but it’s quite obvious that they do, and judging from the number of poeple in the stands, the sport seems to be quite popular. Apparently Turkish folks take their hockey fairly seriously, as evidenced by this crazy brawl between a pair of youth teams. It’s a wild scene that begins simply enough when a couple of guys from the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Sports Club and the Ezurum Youth Sports Club drop the gloves. It escalates quickly from there, turning into an all-out brawl with both goalies going at it, excitable parents and supporters trying to get into the thick of things, and ending when Turkish riot police move in and restore order. That’s a lot of awesome for one headline. Maybe too much…or not enough. Awesome is good. If there had been a brawl between these two AHL teams, then yeah, I probably would have thrown a third “awesome” in there, just for kicks.
Alas there was no brawling between the AHL’s Hershey Bears and Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, but there almost was, thanks to the hi jinks of Bears goalie Braden Holtby. This past Friday the rivals squared off in a hard fought contest that had to be decided in a shootout after ending the game tied at two apiece. Holtby won the game for Hershey after stopping the Pens’ Nick Petersen, and then performed one of the great goalie celebrations in AHL history. Read more ›
