John Daly is nothing if not brutally honest. That’s probably the biggest reason, outside of his booming drives and everyman personality, that endears him to so many golf fans.
His sense of style…eh, not so much.
Daly’s been clean and sober for a few years now, and thanks to lap-band surgery, has lost the wholly unflattering set of man boobs he sported during his first years on tour. You’d think that going through all that would have helped old Long John’s golf game, wouldn’t you?
So far it hasn’t. It’s been four years since Daly finished in the top-10 on the PGA tour, and since he has no status for the 2011 season, is likely resigned to playing mainly on the European Tour, relying on sponsor exemptions to gain entry to a handful of PGA events. It’s a pretty disappointing state of affairs for a two time major winner, and one of the most popular players on tour.
Maybe Daly needs to go back to the things that made him a success in the first place—unhealthy weight gain, a terrible gorgeous mullet, and heavy drinking.
Well, maybe just the last one, because according to the man himself, Daly played better when he was drunk…
“I’ve done everything right and haven’t played worth a” darn, Daly said. “It’s unbelievable. I’m giving myself the chance to play good. It seems the more I work, the worse I get.” [...]
Daly was asked what he’s learned about himself through the years.
“That I was happy when I was a miserable drunk. I played better when I was drunk,” he said.
Daly paused, smiled half a smile and gently shook his head.
“I don’t know,” he said.
I hear that. If there’s anything I’ve learned in my 39 years, it’s that alcohol enhances everything—sports, women, athletic ability, self-esteem, driving skills. OK, maybe not that last one, but you get my drift.
In a weird sort of way, what Daly is saying makes sense. Pro golf is a high stakes sport, and since there’s no teammates to fall back on, all the pressure falls on the individual golfer himself. A little booze helps take the edge off, and in turn, helps keep you lose and unaffected by the fear of failure. That is, until you have that one drink too many, and then your game goes right in the toilet.
Alcohol, the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.
